Checked baggage basics

Each Customer is allowed two free checked bags¹.Golf bags² and skis³ count toward your free checked bag if they are within the weight limit. At the airport, check your bags using our self-tagging kiosks (where available) or with a friendly Southwest agent.

Up to 50 pounds each
62 inches in size (length + width + height)
Three+ bags: $75 each
Oversized bag: $75 (max 80 inches)
Overweight bag: $75 (max 100 lbs.)

Carryon baggage basics

You may carry on one bag and one personal item¹. The bag should be stowed in the overhead compartment, and your small personal item should be stowed under your seat.

Will I get a refund if I cancel my flight?

If you decide not to travel, our normal cancellation policy applies:

Business Select®/Anytime tickets are refundable. You can choose to either a) receive a method-of-payment refund or b) hold the value of the ticket as a  flight credit  that you can use to buy a future flight.
Wanna Get Away® and Wanna Get Away Plus™ tickets are non-refundable. The value of the ticket will be converted to a  flight credit  or Transferable Flight Credit^TM(depending on the fare) that you can use to buy a future flight.

Important: If you don’t cancel your reservation at least 10 minutes before the flight’s original scheduled departure time, the value of Business Select or Anytime tickets will automatically be converted to a Transferable Flight Credit. Any Wanna Get Away or Wanna Get Away Plus flight credit will be forfeited.

What's Southwest's No-Show Policy?

If you don’t cancel your reservation at least 10 minutes before the flight’s original scheduled departure time, your reservation will be canceled, and the value of Business Select or Anytime tickets will be refunded in the form of a Transferable Flight Credit. Any Wanna Get Away or Wanna Get Away Plus funds will be forfeited.

Starting July 1, 2023 (12:00 a.m. CT), for Wanna Get Away or Wanna Get Away Plus award travel reservations: if you do not cancel your reservation at least 10 minutes before the flight’s original scheduled departure time, any points used for booking will be forfeited, along with any taxes and fees associated with your award travel reservation.

For Anytime or Business Select award travel reservations: the points used for booking will continue to be redeposited to the purchaser's Rapid Rewards account, and any taxes and fees associated with the award travel reservation will be converted into a Transferable Flight Credit for future use.

How do i change my Southwest flight?

Most trips can be easily changed through our website or the Southwest app, without needing to call.

Look for the Manage Reservations option on our website or app and then tap or click the Change option.

Change your flight

At this time, you will need to contact us if you need to make a change to your trip for a portion of the passengers, while others will stay on the original trip. Contact us at 1-800-435-9792 in order to split passengers from your trip or change the number of people flying on your trip.

How much does Southwest charge to change a flight?

Southwest never charges fees to change your flights because we understand plans change. You may be asked to pay a difference in fare if the new flight you’re choosing costs more than your original itinerary.

The good news? If your new flight costs less, we’ll refund the difference to the original form of payment (if applicable) or the difference will be held for future use in the form of a flight credit.

*Flight credits unexpired on or created on or after July 28, 2022, do not expire and will show an expiration date until our systems are updated.
