Ron Nirenberg is the mayor of San Antonio, which has the 7th largest population in the United States and is one of the nation’s fastest growing cities.

Mayor Nirenberg is the first San Antonio Mayor of Asian Pacific Islander descent. His mother is Filipino and his paternal grandparents were immigrants from Eastern Europe who passed through Ellis Island.

Through his personal experiences, Mayor Nirenberg developed a core commitment to civic participation and the universal values of liberty, justice, and equal opportunity for every person.

First elected in 2017, Mayor Nirenberg was re-elected to a third term on May 1, 2021.

Under his leadership as mayor, the city has adopted an equity framework in budgeting to reduce poverty, improve public health, and overcome historical socioeconomic inequality. He is focused on making key investments necessary to accommodate San Antonio’s growth, which is expected to nearly double the city’s population by 2040. This forward-looking approach drives the mayor’s vision of a compassionate community with a globally competitive economy.

The Mayor’s policy priorities include workforce development. In 2020, he successfully championed SA Ready to Work, a four-year workforce development program approved by 77 percent of voters and funded without raising the tax rate.

Mayor Nirenberg also played a leading role crafting a long-term solution in 2020 for funding the Edwards Aquifer Protection Program.

In 2017, Mayor Nirenberg created the Mayor’s Housing Policy Task Force seeking to ensure that all San Antonians, regardless of income level, can find quality affordable housing within the city limits. The task force recommendations were approved by City Council in 2018.

In an effort to combat the effects of global climate change, Mayor Nirenberg spearheaded a Climate Action and Adaptation Plan, which was adopted by the City Council in October 2019. Shortly thereafter, Mayor Nirenberg joined the Climate Mayors Steering Committee, a group of 24 mayors who will serve as a leading voice in efforts to further climate action in the more than 400 cities across the U.S. that make up the Climate Mayors coalition.

Grist, a nonprofit media organization, named Mayor Nirenberg one of the Grist 50 in 2020, recognizing him as an emerging leader on climate change in the United States.

In 2018, the United States Conference of Mayors honored Mayor Nirenberg with the Small Business Advocate award for his efforts to encourage entrepreneurism.

Mayor Nirenberg is the immediate-past Chairman of Sister Cities International, a nonpartisan organization that connects cities across the globe through civic, educational and cultural exchanges. The City of San Antonio enjoys active and productive Sister City relationships with 11 cities worldwide, and Mayor Nirenberg has been a participant in establishing productive, people-to-people relationships through global community partnerships and volunteer action.

He was first elected to represent District 8 on the San Antonio City Council in 2013. During his two terms, he championed smart city and regional planning, inclusive economic development, environmental stewardship, fiscal responsibility and governmental accountability. As councilman, he brought together a public-private coalition to save the world-renowned Bracken Bat Cave, the largest colony of bats in the world.

Prior to his public service, Mayor Nirenberg was the founder of two small-businesses, worked as the general manager of KRTU-FM San Antonio, and served as a program director for the Annenberg Public Policy Center where he developed and directed award-winning civic engagement programs.

Mayor Nirenberg graduated summa cum laude from Trinity University and received a Master’s Degree in Communication magna cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania. He grew up in Austin, Texas.

He and his wife, First Lady Erika Prosper, are the proud parents of their son, Jonah.

Councilmember Mario Bravo was elected to serve District 1 on June 5, 2021 and began his term on June 15, 2021.

Jalen McKee-Rodriguez was elected to serve District 2 of San Antonio on June 5, 2021 and sworn in on June 15, 2021. He serves as a fierce advocate for equitable investment in our City’s infrastructure, increased focus on the social determinants of health, accountability and transparency in City operations, and the re-imagination of public safety to prevent crime. When elected, McKee-Rodriguez became the first openly-gay man elected to City Council in San Antonio, and the first openly-gay Black man elected to any seat in Texas.

McKee-Rodriguez’s team takes an organizer’s approach to governance. You will commonly see him with his team block walking, hosting open office hours at local businesses, texting and calling constituents, conducting ride-alongs with city departments in addition to community clean-ups. and providing direct assistance like meals and supplies to families in need.

Born on February 26, 1995 in Knoxville, TN, Jalen is the eldest son of two Veterans of the United States Army. After graduating from Fort Knox High School in Fort Knox, KY, Jalen moved to San Antonio to attend the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he earned a B.A. in Communication, followed by an M.Ed. in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. During his time at UTSA, he served as president of Omega Delta Phi, Executive Director of the Council of Student Organizations, President of the Multicultural Greek Council, and performed as Rowdy the Roadrunner.

Following his collegiate career, he volunteered full-time as an AmeriCorps member with City Year at Davis Middle School before becoming a Math Teacher at Sam Houston High School and, later, Madison High School. Jalen McKee-Rodriguez has brought a fiery (and colorful) brand of advocacy to Council, where he has successfully advocated for a street lighting index paired with record funding, a change to the City’s Equity Lens for infrastructure funding, a Civil Rights Coordinator in the department of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, additional resources for Animal Care Services, and funding for Home Repair and Housing Assistance programs. His work on these issues has garnered the attention of public figures like Taraji P. Henson and Nicki Minaj.

Jalen and his husband Nathan married in April of 2018 and they have two cats and a dog: Cairo, Rome, and London. Jalen is a certified math teacher (grades 4-8 and 7-12), licensed bartender, and Zumba®️ instructor.

Phyllis Viagran was elected to serve as District 3 Councilwoman on June 15, 2021. Her roots and love for the south run deep as she is a proud native of the southside in San Antonio, Texas.

Councilwoman Viagran attended Providence High School and went on to earn her B.A. in Political Science and History from Texas Tech University. Later, she earned her master’s degree in Bicultural Studies from the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Before running for City Council, Phyllis Viagran began her public servant career as an elementary teacher. After years as an educator, she continued her public servant career by working with the San Antonio Police Department as a Community Service Specialist. During her time with SAPD, she specialized as a Domestic Violence Advocate.

After her time with SAPD, Phyllis Viagran continued her career with Visit San Antonio as the Destination Services Coordinator and Membership Sales Coordinator. When the COVID-19 Pandemic hit San Antonio in 2020, Viagran’s position in Visit San Antonio was affected due to the unforeseen hit to the tourism industry in San Antonio. In June 2020, Viagran began working for Older Adults Technology Services (OATS) as a Community Outreach Coordinator and Trainer. Through her training, the reality of the digital divide throughout the southside became even more apparent which led to her becoming a champion for seniors and technology.

Phyllis Viagran has also served the community by volunteering her time to different organizations before being elected. She has served on the Brooks Gives Back Board and The Rape Crisis Center Board.

Currently as Councilwoman, she serves as a member of the Economic and workforce Development Committee, the Public Safety Committee, the Planning and Community Development Committee, Community Health and Culture Committee, and the Municipal Utilities Committee. Also, to include San Antonio Housing Trust Public Facility Corporation, board of directors for Visit San Antonio, CPS rate Advisory Committee, and appointed to serve in the National League of City 2023 Transportation and Infrastructure Service Committee.
